Manuscript preparation

  The Journal of Disaster and Emergency Research (JDER) is an international, semiannual, peer-reviewed, open access and non-profit publication of Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences. JDER publishes All types of articles are subject on different aspects of disasters and emergencies with "the primary objective to improve disaster prevention, preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery policies and practices provided by the academic community to share their professional and academic knowledge in all areas of the subject such as risk management, road accidents, hospital preparedness and climate change" to double-blind peer-review. The journal publishes the following types of contribution: 

Manuscript preparation based on the following guidelines substantially reduces the time taken in editorial processing and results in rapid decision making. Manuscripts should be submitted electronically as a single word file embedding all figures and tables in the following format. Manuscripts should be submitted online at http://jder.ssu.ac.ir/.

Types of Articles

Manuscripts should be presented as one of the following formats:
-Editorial
Editorials are the message of the JDER and are written in-house by the journal's Editorial Board members. Editorials are preferably no more than 2000 words. These provide state of the discussions on the JDER main scopes. Please find further details in the Table.

-Letter to The Editor
Should be about criticism of previous articles, criticism or review of books, analysis of a related topic with disaster and emergency, expansion, and explanation about an idea or a complicated problem. This should be prepared in maximum 1500-2000 words. These articles need no structure. Please find further details in the Table.

-Original Article
These articles must be of primary research, methodologically accurate, and relevant to international health policy and management. They should contain no more than 8000 words excluding structured abstracts, tables, and references. Each manuscript should clearly state an objective or hypothesis; the design of study and methodology (including study setting, patients or participants, inclusion and exclusion criteria, sampling and data source); data analysis and interpretations; the main results of the study, discussing the results; addressing study limitations and the conclusion. For all original articles, a structured abstract is required. Please find further details in the Table.

-Review Article
These articles consist of systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and health system reviews. These articles may be up to 10000 words excluding abstract, tables, and references. The inclusion and exclusion criteria for studies should be described in a flow diagram. The specific type of study or analysis, intervention, population, exposure, outcomes or tests should be described for each data source or article. The authors are to clearly cover the following topics in the method section: search strategy and selection criteria, data extraction, quality assessment, and data analysis. A structured abstract is required.

-Short Communication
These types of articles are not intended to publish preliminary results, but the results which are of exceptional interest and are particularly topical and relevant. These articles should be no more than 4000 words including up to three figures or tables, references and the main text. An unstructured abstract is required for these types of articles.

-lessons learned
Our lessons learned are intended to represent the findings and recommendations of your research project to specialized and non-specialized readers. You may write lessons learned to advise policies based on learned from your research. These articles should not exceed 7000 words. Components of lessons learned are outlined in: An unstructured abstract of maximum of 300 words; Statement of the issue/problem and a short background of the problem; Describing the current situation of the topic; Introducing 2-3 options including the pros and cons of each; Identify the recommended option and justify the recommendation

-Commentary
Readers’ views and comments are high importance in the JDER’s editorial policies. JDER welcomes comments on its published articles to provide a forum for varying perspectives. These articles are mainly invited from eminent scholars in the field. These types of articles should not be more than 2000 words including maximum 2 figures or tables with an unstructured abstract.

-Case reports
Text should be up to 4000 words; Maximum number tables/figures should not be more than 3; Maximum number of references should not be more than 20.

Text Style Guide

  The manuscript must be submitted as a Word document. PDF is not accepted. Use A4 size. Text should be left-justified. The manuscript must be typed with "Times New Roman" font, size 14 for the title, 12 for subtitles, and 11 for the text. Use 1.15 line spacing.
Language (usage and editing services)
All publications in the JDER are in English. Authors whose first language is not English should make sure their manuscript is written in idiomatic English before submission. Please write your text in good English (American or British usage is accepted, but not a mixture of these). No language and copy-editing services are provided by the JDER; hence, authors who feel their manuscript may require editing to eliminate possible grammatical or spelling errors are encouraged to obtain such services prior to submission. The authors are responsible for all costs associated with such services.

Title page
The title page must contain the following information:

• Title of the article.
• Authors’ names: Full names (First, Middle, and Last) for all the authors of an article should be given and specified with superscript number(s) for the affiliation(s) [e.g., Mark Junior Smiths¹]. The name of the corresponding author(s) should be specified with an asterisk after name (e.g., Mark Junior Smiths*). Where the family name may be ambiguous (e.g., a double name), please indicate this clearly and write Orcid Number of all authors.
• Authors’ Affiliations: (Department / Research Center/Institution,  Name of School, University, City, and Country)

*Postal address, E-mail and Telephone number of the corresponding author.

• Abstract: Include a structured abstract of no more than 300 words for original articles and reviews. An abstract is often presented separately from the article, so it must be able to stand alone. It should state briefly and clearly the purpose and setting of the research, the principal findings and major conclusions, and the article's contribution to knowledge. Abstracts should be prepared in JDER style including Introduction, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.
• Keywords: Keywords are used for indexing purposes. Each manuscript should provide three to five keywords according to the Medical Subject Headings, MESH (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/MBrowser.html).

Manuscript body
-Introduction: The introduction should provide a background and specifies the research objective of the study or observation. This section must emphasize the purpose and the rationale for the study. It should neither review the subject extensively nor should it have data or conclusions of the study.

-Materials and Methods: Materials and methods must indicate clearly the steps taken to acquire the information. It should be detailed. Repeating the details of standard techniques is best avoided. The software used for statistical analysis and description of the actual method should be mentioned. This section should have some subtitles.

-Results: Authors should describe their important observations in this section. The data should have been analyzed statistically.
*Tables: Tables should be in Word format and placed in the main text where the table is first cited. Tables should be consecutively numbered in accordance with their appearance in the text. Footnotes should be placed below the table body. Tables should be sparing in the use and the data presented in them should not be described elsewhere in the manuscript. To show P-value, write in the text; P-value and use the symbol P in the tables.
*Figures:  Each illustration should have a caption. A caption should comprise a brief title (not on the figure itself) and a description of the illustration. Keep the illustration texts to minimum but explain all symbols and abbreviations used. Figures should be included only if they improve the manuscript.

-Discussion: Discussion should emphasize the new and important aspects of the study. Possible explanations for these findings should be mentioned.

-Conclusion: In this section, the overall conclusion of the author(s) from the research, the limitation of the work, and the implications of the finding for future research should be noted.

-Acknowledgments: After the “Conclusion” section, the authors can acknowledge the technical help/financial grant of their colleagues/institutes, etc.
In this section, individuals or organizations who cooperated in the study, except the authors, can be appreciated. This includes all the people who helped the author/s materially or spiritually (technical, writing, etc. support). It is necessary to mention the reason of appreciation and individuals' roles briefly if possible.
It also should be noted if the article is a research thesis or research project. If it is the result of a thesis, mentioning the name of the university is vital, and if it is driven from a research project, the research code number and the name of the organization that approved it must be mentioned. Generally, in the case of financial support, it is necessary to mention the name of the research institute or organization that supported it.
If you have a project or a thesis Code, the relevant code to be written in this part.
*Article must have the approval of the Ethics Committee and the ethics code number should be mentioned at the end of Acknowledgements. In the case of not having a code of ethics, authors should mention all ethical issues based on the Helsinki Declaration.

 -Conflicts of interest: Authors must acknowledge and declare any sources of funding and potential conflicting interest, such as receiving funds or fees by, or holding stocks and shares in, an organization that may profit or lose through publication of your paper.

- Authors' contributions: All authors' contribution statements must include:

• Designed research (project concept, development of overall research plan, and study oversights)
• Conducted research (conductance of the experiments and data collection).
• Provided essential reagents, or provided essential materials (applies to authors who contributed by providing animals, constructs, databases, etc., necessary for the research).
• Analyzed data or performed statistical analysis.
• Wrote the paper (only authors who made a major contribution).
• Had primary responsibility for final content.
• All authors have read and approved the final manuscript. For single-authored research papers and reviews, please state: The sole author is responsible for all parts of the manuscript.

For example

Manavdadi A, Rahmani B, and Hashemi P designed research; Manandadi A and Rahmani B conducted research; Khosravi P analyzed data; and Rahmati A, Manandadi A, and Mohammadi B wrote the paper. Mavandadi A had primary responsibility for final content. All authors read and approved the final manuscript.

MA, RB, and HP designed research; MA and RB conducted research; KhP analyzed data; and RA, MA, and MB wrote the paper. MA had primary responsibility for final content. All authors read and approved the final manuscript

-References: 

1. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of cited references and these should be checked before the manuscript is submitted.
2. In order to minimize errors in writing sources, it is better to apply bibliographic information management software such as Endnote and Reference Manager.
3. References should be numbered consecutively (Vancouver style) and cited in the manuscript text by number (not author and date).
4. References should not be formatted as footnotes.

Proofs

  The corresponding author will be sent page proofs (as PDF files) by email (jder@ssu.ac.ir or jder.office@gmail.com ). These should be checked immediately and corrections, as well as answers to any queries, returned to the journal as an annotated PDF via email within 3-5 working days (further details are supplied with the proof). It is the author's responsibility to check proofs thoroughly.
JDER follows AMA style (American Medical Association Manual of Style, 10th Edition) since May 2015.
We will do everything possible to get your article published quickly and accurately. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are sent back to us in one communication. Please note that rephrasing sentences, additions, or omissions are not allowed at the proof stage.
Important Note: Authors should approve the PDF Proof and provide us with the corrections in due time. Not meeting the deadline and a long delay to respond could lead to withdraw of paper at this stage.

Page charges
  All articles are processed without any charges. Therefore published articles are completely free of charge either in review or publishing phase.

Reviewers
  During submission, you will be asked if you wish to suggest the names and email addresses of potential reviewers. Note that the editor-in-chief retains the sole right to decide whether or not the suggested reviewers are invited.
Submission
Authors should ensure that papers conform to the scientific and style instructions given above. In order to accelerate the publication process, the Journal requires that manuscripts be submitted online using the online submission facility of the journal.
JDER offers a completely digital submission and production process. At the time of submission of a manuscript, thus, it is advised to prepare production-quality files beforehand to speed up the process. It is advised that authors should follow the given guidelines above unless otherwise the submission will be returned to the authors for additional revision which may decelerate the manuscript evaluation process and hence delay publication.  Thus careful attention is fully appreciated by the editorial members of the journal.
Authors are required to register to create an account for submission at the online submission site.  Authors can also follow on-screen instructions and the system will provide the essential guide through the submission process.
After the creation of an account, authors are able to exit/re-enter in the account at any stage.
All submissions are kept strictly confidential.

Copyright Policy

Open Access (OA)
  JDER is a not-for-profit journal. As an open-access journal, JDER makes all publications immediately available to any reader, anywhere. There are no publication fees and submission fees. All articles will be immediately and permanently free for everyone to read and download upon publication. Permitted (re) use is defined by Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY).

Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY): permit users to copy, to create extracts abstracts, abstracts, and new works from the article, to alter and revise the article, and to make commercial use of the article.

Peer review process
   Each submitted manuscript is assessed by Editor-in-Chief, at first for its quality, accuracy, novelty, relevance, and significance. If the manuscript meets the minimum standards, it enters the double-blind peer review process in maximum of two weeks. If the submitted manuscript is considered out of the journal's scope or inappropriate to publish, it will be rejected or returned to the corresponding author without entering the peer-review process. The manuscript will then be sent at least to one in-office and two out of office referees for review. Authors can suggest to the journal office if they do not wish their manuscript to be reviewed by a particular reviewer because of potential conflicts of interest but, it is up to the Editor-in-Chief to accept it. The final decision pertaining to each manuscript is determined by Editor-in-Chief and after that, the decision will be immediately sent to the corresponding author up to about two months. The editor can reject manuscript at any time before publication even after acceptance if concerns arise about the integrity of the work. In the peer-review process, research protocols and plans for statistical analysis will be reviewed. Editorials, letters, and book reviews will not be entered to the peer-review process. 

Archiving Policy
  The articles Published by JDER is archived on our website and also in multiple international databases around the world including to increase visibility and long-term digital preservation.
